The Australian Government’s stated aim is that, by 2020, Australia will be among the world’s leading digital economies. With this in mind, the 2011–12 Regional Telecommunications Independent Review Committee is reviewing telecommunications services in regional, rural and remote parts of Australia.

The committee is considering all received submissions and comments made at the public consultations and is currently drafting the report. Thank you to all who had a say in the 2011–12 Regional Telecommunications Review.

The committee must provide a report to the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy by 5 March 2012.

All submissions received are published here unless they are labelled confidential. Personal details such as phone numbers and mailing/home addresses are removed where appropriate before publishing. The deadline for submissions was 11 December 2011.

Areas the review will focus on

The Minister has asked the committee to have particular regard for the opportunities that the National Broadband Network (NBN) creates for the emerging digital economy to improve the delivery of:

  • health and education outcomes
  • growth in local economies
  • business efficiencies and opportunities
  • government services and programs, including local government services.

The committee also has interest for:

  • the communications needs of Indigenous Australians, particularly those that live in rural and remote communities
  • developments in the terrestrial and satellite mobile phone sector
  • the consumer concerns of people and businesses in regional, rural and remote Australia.
